In my recent conversation with Vicki, I was struck by the depth of insight she shared about leadership and personal growth. Her journey began in an unexpected placethe Outer Hebrideswhich taught her an invaluable lesson: do not be afraid to take an unconventional path. Sometimes, stepping outside the ordinary can shape a career in remarkable ways.

Here are the key takeaways from our discussion:

Embrace unusual beginnings

Vickis first role as a consultant in a remote setting highlighted the importance of adaptability and courage. Leadership often starts with saying yes to opportunities that challenge us.

Ask for help and build partnerships

One of Vickis strongest reflections was the power of asking for help. Leadership is not about doing everything aloneit is about creating a sense of partnership and collaboration, especially in complex networks like healthcare.

Recognise and manage emotions

Effective leadership requires emotional intelligence. Vicki emphasised the need to acknowledge emotionsboth our own and those of othersand understand their roots. This awareness can transform conflict into resolution.

Advocate for what matters

Safeguarding children is an area Vicki is deeply passionate about. Her advocacy as a designated doctor for looked after children shows that leadership thrives when aligned with personal values and purpose.

Invest in personal growth

Vicki mentioned the value of seeking a life coacha step many overlook. Coaching can provide clarity and confidence when navigating leadership challenges.

Prioritise self-care

Leadership is demanding, and self-care is non-negotiable. Vicki shared her simple yet effective strategy: three minutes of music to reset and recharge. Find what works for you and make it a habit.

And, finally

Leadership is not a straight roadit is a journey shaped by choices, passions, and resilience. Vickis story reminds us that when we lead with authenticity and care, we truly make a difference.
